Does pregnancy in a character ruin a book?

What I mean to say is, when the author makes one of the main characters pregnant, with or without a valid reason too, does this ruin a story or does it enhance it? Some examples are Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer and Miriam in The Last Renshai by Mickey Zucker Reichert.
